Platform Tennis is an American racquet sport enjoyed by thousands of people of all ages. It is the only racquet sport that players can enjoy outdoors in cold weather. This unique appeal attracts people who desire fresh air, competition, and social engagement – all on a chilly winter’s day or night.
Most of the rules follow regular tennis including scoring. Besides the small court size, there are however significant differences between paddle and tennis. There is only one serve allowed — no second chance. The equipment is different as well. The game is played with a short-handled, hard-surface racquet and a sponge rubber ball. The most intriguing difference, however, is the use of the screens or wires to keep the ball in play.
All these factors combine to make platform tennis “the chess game of racquet sport,” according to the American Platform Tennis Association.
The courts are a gathering place for families and friends, young and old, men and women, to socialize, stay fit, and have fun during the winter months.
Regular play is scheduled by Scott Speier, who can be reached at (301) 468-5657. Non-club members can purchase annual “Paddle Only” memberships for $295 per person or $425 per family.
