Mid-June 2016 Update

Jun 12, 2016   //   by President   //   News, Notes from the President  //  No Comments

Hello Old Farm Members,

We’re off to a great start to the 2016 season. I’d like to take this opportunity to provide a few reminders about our rules:

No Glass Containers.
Please transfer all liquids to plastic or aluminum containers. This is a Montgomery County regulation that we must enforce, or else we can be shut down by the County.

Increased Supervision of Water Guns.
We’ve seen increased use of water guns, and a corresponding need for our lifeguards to intervene when they are used. We ask parents to closely monitor your child’s use of water guns and to consider whether your child is responsible enough to use a water gun. Water guns should only be used within the pool, and not on the deck or between the deck and the pool. Lifeguards have discretion to confiscate water guns (or any other pool toys) if they are being used to the detriment of other members or during crowded times. Based on feedback we are receiving from the lifeguards, we may have to ban water guns if they continue to be a problem, so kindly help us keep water gun use well controlled.

Age Limit on Shuffleboard and Cornhole Equipment.
We’d like for all members and guests to be able to enjoy the amenities at the club. However, we have found that some of our youngest members have found alternative ways to enjoy our shuffleboard and cornhole equipment. Unfortunately, this has resulted in us having to completely replace the gear. As such, the Board has decided to implement an age limit on the use of shuffleboard and cornhole equipment; starting now, the equipment cannot be checked out by children younger than 13 years old. Kids under 13 years of age can still play, but we now require an adult to check out the equipment and to be present at all times. Thanks for your understanding.

In other news, masters swimming and water aerobics are just starting, so please see our website for more details if you are interested in these programs.

This Friday, we’re having another Food Truck Friday from 5:00-7:00 pm. Pizza Brama will be at the pool serving pizza, roasted appetizers, salads, and desserts from their wood-fired oven. Please see their menu here: www.pizzabrama.com.

See you at the pool!

John Hudalla

It’s Almost Opening Day!

Hello Old Farm Members,

We’ll be opening for the 2016 season on Saturday, May 28 at noon. Our operating hours can be found here. We are excited to introduce our new pool water heaters on that day. Considering our recent weather, the heaters will be a very welcome addition to the Club.

If you haven’t already renewed your membership for 2016, please do so now. Information on renewing your membership can be found here. You can also contact our membership chairs with questions at membership@oldfarmpool.org. We will again be using our electronic scan entry system at the front desk this year. If you need a new membership card, please ask the front desk attendant when you come to the Club. New members can likewise pick up their membership cards from the front desk.

Swim team practice begins on Tuesday, May 31, and dive team practice beings on Wednesday, June 1. If you haven’t signed your children up for these great summer activities, you can find information on swim team here and on dive team here.

The Swim Team will be conducting assessments on all swimmers interested in the Pre-Team and Little Eagles Programs prior to registration. Assessment sessions will be held June 6th-9th at either 4:45 pm or 5:45 pm. Please see the information here on how to sign up an an assessment.

The Dive Team is excited to have our own Jackie Jacobson as coach this year. We are also proud to announce that diving champion Kevin Burke will be conducing dive clinics for our team (included in your dive team registration fee) on 5 Saturdays throughout the season. We can’t wait to see him perform. More information can be found here.

Due to the recent weather, the upgrade to our paddle tennis courts has been at a standstill. With a little luck from Mother Nature, we are hoping that work will resume this week.

The Board of Directors has been working hard to ensure that 2016 is another great year at Old Farm. We look forward to seeing you starting Saturday!

P.S. Check our website soon for updates on masters swimming, water aerobics, and triathlon training for adults and kids.

April 2016 Update

Apr 24, 2016   //   by President   //   Notes from the President  //  No Comments
Hello Old Farm Members,

As the weather has gotten nicer and we approach opening day, the board has been busy preparing for the 2016 season.  Here are a few points of interest:

Early Bird Season Ends Saturday, April 30

Please get your dues payments in as soon as possible to take advantage of early bird rates.  If you have membership questions, please e-mail our membership volunteers at membership@oldfarmpool.org.

Membership Cards for Front Desk Check-In

As you know, we began using a barcode-scan entry system last year.  Your barcode cards from last year may be used again this year (and for years to come).  Nevertheless, some of you reported that the barcodes on the key tags have worn off and are unusable.  If you have experienced this problem, please see the front desk staff to obtain a new card.  New members may also obtain their membership cards from the front desk staff.

Update on Improvements

Installation on our new pool water heaters is nearly complete, and we expect to have them operational on opening day (Saturday, May 28).  You also may have noticed that our paddle tennis courts are undergoing a complete renovation.  We expect this work to be completed within a week.

Calling All Gardeners!

Board member Tom Walsh has undertaken a beautification project for the club’s grounds.  If you have green thumb, and you are interested in volunteering your gardening skills and/or plantings for the betterment of the club, please contact Tom at torger@verizon.net.

Swim and Dive Team Registration (and information about our other programs, too!)

Registration night for the Old Farm Eagles Swim and Dive Team will take place on Thursday, May 5 at 7:00 pm at Farmland Elementary School.  If your children haven’t previously participated, please consider this great opportunity for summer fun and exercise.  Our swim and dive teams are open to children of all ability levels.  We will also have information available about our masters swimming program, adult and kid triathlon training, and water aerobics classes.

Rockin’ 2016 Kickoff Party – Mark Your Calendars

On Saturday, May 21 at 6:00 pm, we’ll be hosting our annual kickoff party at the pool.  This year, we’re excited to have a great local band, Driven to Clarity, providing the music.  This promises to be a great time, so make sure you buy your tickets here.  This event is open to non-members, as well, so invite your friends!

Looking forward to seeing everyone at the pool!

Looking Forward to the 2016 Season

Feb 21, 2016   //   by President   //   Notes from the President  //  No Comments

Greetings Old Farm Swim and Paddle Tennis Club Members!

My name is John Hudalla, and I am the new President of Old Farm Pool and Paddle Tennis Club.  I am taking over this position from Bruce Kay, who was the Club’s President for over a decade.  On behalf of the Board of Directors, I’d like to thank Bruce for his dedication and tireless work as our leader over those years.

In 2016, we welcome three new board members:  Amy Ruther and Tom Walsh will be our membership chairs, and David Markert will be responsible for the Old Farm dive team.  They replace Bruce Kay, Griff Lindsay, and Eric Forsythe, who retired from the board.  We thank Griff, Eric, and Bruce (again) for their efforts on behalf of the Club.

The Board has some exciting updates about the 2016 season.  This Spring, we will be performing a comprehensive overhaul and upgrade of our platform tennis courts.  This will include resurfacing of both courts, lining both courts with platform tennis and pickleball regulation boundaries, replacement of all screens, and installation of locking snowboards.

We are also excited to announce that we have purchased pool water heaters that will be installed and operational by opening day of the pool season.  As you may recall, we held a referendum of the membership in November, and the overwhelming majority of responding members (82%) favored installing pool heaters.  We expect that the heaters will make for a much more pleasant swimming experience early in the season.

Our annual membership season will begin in March, and we will be using the same online membership system that we used in 2015.  Be on the lookout for information on how to rejoin for the 2016 season.

The Board is looking forward to a great 2016 season.  Please feel free to contact me at president@oldfarmpool.org if you have any questions or concerns.

End of 2015 Season Message

Thanks for a great summer and thanks for fantastic closing weekend.  Lots of people were at the pool taking advantage of the beautiful weather and the opportunity to spend time with our neighbors and friends.

Closing day was lots of fun.  The Curley’s Q BBQ truck was a great hit, lots of puppies joined the “Puppies in the Pool” festivities and lots of people helped store all the deck furniture.  Thanks to all of you who stayed and helped.  We could not have done it without you.

Once again, a special Thank You to all of the members of the Board of Directors who organized all of the weekend events including the movie night on Saturday, the food truck and the overall work it takes to keep the pool running.

This has been a great summer and hopefully left everyone with fond memories.  Even with the summer being over, there are still lots of things happening around Old Farm Pool.  Pickleball continues on Monday, Wednesday and Thursday evenings as well as Saturday and Sunday mornings.  Come and join us.  Paddle Tennis will begin in November and we are planning an Octoberfest event in……wait for it…..October!  More info will be coming out soon.

Thanks again for a great season.

We will be hosting a movie night on Saturday September 5th and our closing day is MONDAY September 7th.  We will publish the full schedule of events for closing day very soon.

Just a reminder, if you have been a long-time member of Old Farm Pool, we are looking for pictures as part of a project being put together by GFCA.  Please check your basements for pictures from the pool including swim meets, events, family gatherings.

Thanks and hope to see you at the pool.

Notes from the President – June 15th

Greetings all,

Pool membership is up, Swim and Dive teams are in full swing with lots of new faces and the water temperature is perfect.  Come on up and enjoy the pool.

A note from our friends at TildenWood pool:

Monday 6/15, TW hosts an End of School Party form 2 PM to 4 PM.  All middle school aged kids and younger are welcome to come to the pool where we’ll have games, fun activities, and snacks, featuring Carmen’s Italian Ice.  (Old Farms members are welcome as if it were a “swap day”.  Normal guest policies apply to other friends.)

Just a reminder, if you have not seen it, we have prominently posted a list of all the pool rules on the wall of the pool house near the ladies locker room.  Please take a moment to review them as our Lifeguard staff is strictly enforcing the rules.

Looking forward to seeing everyone at the pool!

Notes from the President – 2015 Pool Season

Greetings all!  The 2015 season is off to a great start.  It is nice seeing all of you return and I’d like to welcome our new members.

We have received some very positive feedback about out new membership management system and it is proving to be a great asset in tracking who is at the pool.

I would like to remind all of you that there should be no food or drink on the pool deck.  Please keep all food and liquid refreshments either on the patio or at the tables at the edge of the deck.   Thanks for your cooperation on this.

As a reminder, Saturday June 6th is the Wine and Cheese event at the pool starting at 7:00 pm.  We are happy to have the Whippoorwills return this year to provide us music for the evening.

Notes from the President

May 9, 2015   //   by President   //   Notes from the President  //  No Comments

It’s hard to believe the pool opens in only 13 days.  Before we unlock the gates for the season, there are lots of things happening including Swim/Dive Registration Night on May 14th at Farmland Elementary starting at 7:00pm.  Sign up for the teams, meet the coaches and say hello to everyone after a long winter.  We are also having a pre-season party on Saturday May 16th at the pool.  We will have a band and a chance to enjoy the pool before we officially open.

Work to get the pool ready is well underway with some of our additional deck furniture arriving, complete replacement of the pump and filter system and a major trimming of the large tree near the diving well.  There was a stress crack that could have eventually caused part of the tree to fall.  The tree still provides plenty of shade and it is much safer for everyone.

Looking forward to seeing everyone at the pool!

2015 Update #1 from the President

Greetings Old Farm Swim and Paddle Tennis Club Members!

Despite the cold February weather, the Board of Directors is already hard at work planning for the 2015 swim season. I’d like to start by welcoming our newest Board member, Cindy Zelaya, who will be working as our Director for Special Projects. She replaces Suzanne Stack who retired from the Board last year. We also welcome Shannon Dietrich as our new Bookkeeper. She replaces Mary Beth May who served as our bookkeeper for several years. Thank you for a job well done and welcome to our new Board members.

As we finalize the budget for 2015 and prepare to announce our dues structure, let me tell you about what we are planning. First and most important, we have discussed with Georgetown Aquatics, our Management Company, the importance of the guard staff enforcing all the pool rules. We want to make sure your safety is our first priority and enforcement of the rules will help provide the safe environment we all want.

We are presently configuring new membership management software for the 2015 season that will allow for more controlled access to the pool. This software will require members to electronically check-in upon arrival at the pool. We will soon be providing more information on this software, the membership renewal process, the 2015 dues, and the check-in procedure.

As for physical changes and upgrades for the 2015 season, we are currently planning on replacing the pool pump motors and filter system. The current system, although very effective, is 50 years old and has been expensive to repair and maintain over the years. In fact, last season we had to go to extraordinary means to keep the system functioning. The new filter system will be installed before the start of the season. We will also be purchasing additional round pool tables, chairs and umbrellas to provide additional seating around the deck.

We are planning several other modifications and upgrades, most of which might not be as obvious to you, but we hope will enhance your experience at the pool.

Looking forward to a great 2015 season!
